Take a look at this compelling image featuring two World War II era women.

JCM1994-73-2

This striking photograph was utilized for a poster of some sort, most likely an enticement for women to help with the War effort. A close inspection of the seated woman reveals the last name “Herndon” and possibly the first initial “N.” The photograph’s donor was Commander of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant.

I wanted to highlight a photo this morning in acknowledgement of National Doughnut Day. A search for “doughnut” in the JoCoHistory photo database yielded one single result: this snapshot of firefighters drinking coffee and eating doughnuts.

Interestingly, there is a nearly identical photo in the book History of Firefighting in Johnson County, Kansas, published in 1978. Thus we know that this group is the  Fire Chief’s Association at a 1952 meeting at Monticello station (present day Shawnee). The Chiefs from the county’s various municipalities are represented here.
