J. E. Bernard

J. E. Bernard, the subject of this sketch was born in Virginia, 1826. In ’39 his parents emigrated to Calaway co., Mo., then as it were, the confines of civilization. In ’55 he was united in marriage to Miss Lumema Maxwell, of Pike co., Mo., and the union is blessed with four children—two sons, Thos. E. and Wm. R., and two daughters, Cornelia A. and Minnie D. Mr. B. came and permanently located in Johnson co. in ’69, and purchased a portion of the Shawnee mission farm, upon which he now resides. Since coming to his present home Mr. B. has been engaged in farming and stock dealing, and is now engaged in the mercantile business. Al of his business operations have been attended with success and his name is revered by all who know him, as is clearly exemplified by his having been chosen one of the board of County Commissioners in ’73. A view of his fine property can be seen in this work.
