A. J. Clemmans
Andrew Jackson Clemmans was born in the year 1833, at Mr. Pleasant, Ohio; attended the common schools of that state until 19, when he worked four years learning the blacksmiths’ trade, in Bridgeport, O.; then emigrated to Illinois, working at his trade three years. July 4, ’56 he was married to Miss Sarah Ann Parks, formerly of Harrison Co., O. In April ’58 he located in Olathe, engaging in blacksmithing business, which he continued to ’67, when he engaged in the manufacture of plows, in company with Mr. F. Gilbert. In ’69 they sold out the plow factory and opened an agricultural and seed store, which they continue at the present time; carrying a large stock and being obliging gentlemen, always ready to accommodate their many customers, they are doing a prosperous business. A view of their business house will be seen on page 41 of this work. In ’69 Mr. Clemmans was elected Sheriff of this county, and re-elected in ’71 by an increased majority; during the four years no prisoner escaped him, and no duty was left undone. His career as sheriff was entirely satisfactory, and he has many friends in Johnson County. A view of his residence will be seen on page 39.
